SABOLYK, JOHN - John Sabolyk, age 82, died Sunday, May 26, 2002 after a brief illness. John was born September 4, 1919 in Yonkers to John and Anna Makara Sabolyk. He is survived by his beloved daughter Annie (Cerniglio) Koury. Devoted grandfather of Anthony John, Nicholas Daniel and Dante Michael Cerniglio. John attended Holy Trinity Parochial School and graduated from Roosevelt High School. He was a star football player as well as very active in other school athletics. During the 1930's and 1940's he participated in the Yonkers Senior League. John enlisted in the US Navy, December 1941 and served aboard the USS Fitch DD 462 for four years as Petty Officer 1st Class, Fire Controllman. He participated in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, European African, Middle Eastern Campaign, and American Campaign the Normandy Invasion. The USS Fitch was first to fire at Normandy Beach and was directly involved in the rescue of sailors and officers of the USS Cory on D-Day. He received medals for all the above including the Commemorative Medal The 40th Anniversary of the Victory in the great Patriotic War (WW II) from Russian President Boris Yeltsin. In 1946 after John married Helen (Clara) Siemonski, they resided in Yonkers. Helen predeceased John on November 18, 1972. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Bartholomew's Church in Yonkers. In 1950 John became a Yonkers Police Officer and was stationed out of the 2nd Precinct and patrolled Yonkers Avenue for over 20 years. John retired in October 1983. John was an avid golfer and a member of YPGA, Westchester Police Association, and Dunwoodie Seniors. During a tournament there John shot and set a record 69 at that time for Senior Golfers. Funeral Thursday 10 am with commital following at Ferncliff Cemetery. The family will be present Tuesday and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. F.
