BORRELLI, LUCY

Lucy Borrelli, a longtime Harrison resident passed away peacefully on Wednesday. She was 94 years young, born to Maria Francesca and Gaetano Borrelli. Lucy is survived by her brother Charles (Minnie) and predeceased by brothers: Jimmy, Richard, Louie, Joseph, George and Robbie and sisters: Philomena, Angelina, Josephine and Janet. She holds a special place in the hearts of three generations of nieces and nephews to whom she is a second mother and special friend. Christopher C. Carilli, of Yonkers, died suddenly on August 31, 2010. He was 40. CASCIO, CARMELO "MAL"

Carmelo "Mal" Cascio, a longtime resident of Port Chester, died of natural causes on September 2, 2010 in Port Chester. He was 92. Mr. Cascio worked as a Mason for various contractors in the metropolitan region. He retired in 1976. He was a member of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local #5 in New York. Mr. Cascio was born July 30, 1918 in Westfield, MA to James and Angelina Baccari Cascio. He was educated in Westfield, MA and Port Chester, NY and graduated from Port Chester High School in 1935. Mr. Cascio served infantry in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945, attaining the rank of Platoon Sgt. He received 3 Battle Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star for his service in the European and Pacific theatres of war. On January 20, 1946 he married Mildred Esposito at Corpus Christi Church in Port Chester, NY. Mr. Cascio lived in Port Chester for the past 82 years. Locally he was a member of Corpus Christi Parish. Mr. Cascio will be remembered for intellectual curiosity, sense of humor and his love of his family, the Yankees and country. He is survived by his wife, Mildred, three children Susan Menick, Judith Cascio and Vincent Cascio, his son in law John Menick and daughter in law Diane Ritch Cascio. He is also survived by four grandsons, John Menick Jr., Vincent Cascio Jr., James Cascio and Daniel Chiappetta. Calling hours are 4-8 PM TODAY at Joseph Tutera Funeral Home Inc., 121 S. CROWE JR, PATRICK

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Patrick Joseph Crowe Sr., 73, of Pearl River, New York. Pat was born a first generation IrishAmerican on July 19, 1937 to Michael and Bridget (nee Gallagher) Crowe and was raised in the Bronx with his six siblings. Pat graduated Bedford Park Academy before enlisting and serving in the United States Army. Pat married his very own "Lovely Rose of Clare" Anne "Annette" (nee Galvin) of Quilty, Ireland on April 30, 1960. Together they shared fifty joyous years of marriage and selflessly raised six children whom he loved and cherished. In 1961 Pat became a proud member of the New York Police Department where his career spanned 22 years. His service included assignments with Safety Unit B, the 34th precinct and eventual retirement from the 24th precinct in 1983. Pat's commitment to remain part of the work force would lead him to Prudential Securities where he supervised Executive Transportation and Safety; his employment lasted 19 years. Being an active participant in the community was important to Pat and his involvement with many organizations throughout his life helped develop a group of close friends that he held in the highest regard. He served with distinction within the following organizations; American Legion Post 329, NYPD Emerald Society, Rockland County Shields, Pearl River Elks Lodge 2041, Hudson Valley 10-13 Association, Rockland County Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 3 and the Rockland County Ancient Order of Hibernians Pipes and Drums where he once proudly served as the Drum Major. Pat is survived by his wife Annette, daughter Ann Crowe Lyons and her husband Robert, son Patrick Joseph Crowe Jr. and his wife Lisa and their children Patrick and Matthew, daughter Catherine Crowe McGarvey and her husband Robert, son Kevin Crowe and his wife Lauren and their children Kelly, Gina, Kevin and Michael, daughter Deirdre Crowe Pettus and her husband Keith and their children Rory, Grace, Declan and Bridget, son Sean Crowe and his wife Rasha and their children Ashlin and Aidan. His grandchildren will miss special activities with their Pop-Pop. He will be dearly missed by his brothers, Thomas, James, Edward and sister Eileen Crowe Reedy. He is predeceased, by his parents and brothers John and Michael. He was also the brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend of many who will miss him sorely. DEYRUP, ASTRITH

Astrith Deyrup passed away on August 26th at Nyack Hospital. Astrith was born on April 22, 1923. Astrith was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers and 4 sisters. She obtained a Master's in Music History from Barnard and was accomplished on both the flute and piano, but later went back to her first love of art. She taught Batik at the New School and later authored a book on Batik. Her landscapes had vivid colors and were stunning. We will all miss her ever-pleasant smile. A funeral service will be held at the Fellowship of Reconciliation 521 N Broadway, Upper Nyack at 10:00 am on Saturday September 4th. FITZPATRICK, RUSSELL EDWARD

Russell Edward Fitzpatrick entered peacefully into heaven on September 1, 2010 with his loving family by his side. He was born January 29, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY to John and Ruth Fitzpatrick. Russell has been a Valley Cottage resident for 43 years and prior lived in Yonkers, NY. Russell married his high school sweetheart, Judith Andersen, in 1962 and had four beautiful children. He owned and operated an Arnold Bread franchise for over 30 years. Russell was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. He loved the NY Yankees and was an avid NY Giants fan. He coached the Valley Cottage Indians and the Nyack Valley Cottage Little League for over 10 years. His greatest joy above anything else was spending time with his family. Russell is survived by his loving wife, Judy; daughters Kristin Callan and her husband John, Barbara Beebe and her husband Kurt, and Jackie Meyers and her husband Shawn; and his son Russell Fitzpatrick and his wife Mindi; his 10 grandchildren: Amanda, Alexis, Hannah, Abigail, Jared, Luke, Max, Karlee, Jack and Jordan; his father John Fitzpatrick and his sister Jane Caddis. FORD, THOMAS

Thomas Francis Ford of Garnerville died on August 31, 2010 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, after a courageous battle with a year-long illness. Tom is survived by his wife Ellen and daughter Kerry, of Garnerville; a son, Thomas, daughter-in-law, Tamatha and granddaughter, Schuyler, all of Lawsonville, NC. He also leaves behind a brother, Gene, of Fayetteville, GA; a sister Mary Pace, of Washingtonville, NY; two sisters-in-law; 2 brothers-in-law; and 8 nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all. Tom was born in the Bronx in 1943 to Thomas and Jane (Regan) Ford, both now deceased. He was a Vietnam veteran who served with distinction in the United States Marine Corps from 1963-1967. In 1967, a week after returning from Vietnam, he met his future wife, Ellen, at the Expo 67 Fair in Montreal. They married in 1969 while Tom was attending the NYC Police Academy. He served on the NYPD from 1969 to 1992, retiring as a sergeant after many years of dedicated service to the people of New York City. Tom was very proud of both his service in the Marines and his time with the NYPD and he was fiercely proud to be an American. More than anything, however, Tom was an extraordinarily devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, as well as a loyal friend and trustworthy fellow soldier and police officer. He was known in the community for his generosity, fair-mindedness and honesty. Some of his lifelong interests included politics, sports, fishing, world and American history, travel, and reading. He was also a great lover of nature and animals - in addition to his family he will be missed by his 2 rescue dogs, Charlotte and Emily. A wake will be held at Michael Higgins Funeral Home, Rt. 9W, Stony Point from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Friday. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 AM at the same location. FREY, BARBARA GERLACH

Barbara Gerlach Frey - beloved wife of John J. Frey and mother of Jeffrey, Stephanie, Judith, Mark and Barbara Jean, died on August 15th, 2010 in Sonoma, CA. Barbara, a resident of Ossining for most of her life, was surrounded by her entire family which included her twelve grandchildren who had come to celebrate her 90th birthday on August 12th. She was the daughter of the late Herbert C. Gerlach, former County Executive of Westchester County and granddaughter of Benjamin Brandreth of Ossining, New York. Interment will be held at the Dale Avenue Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on September 7th, 2010. Friends of the family are welcome.


GIARDINA, JOSEPH

Joseph Anthony Giardina, Sr. Loving Husband, Father, Grand Father and Great Grand Father Joseph Anthony Giardina, Sr. was born in Messina, Italy July 16, 1915 and passed away on August 31, 2010. He came to this country through Ellis Island with his parents when he was just 5 years old. After high school, Joseph joined the Army and was stationed at West Point as an enlisted man. He became an American Citizen and served in the Army, Army Air Corp, and the Air Force. Serving his country in WWII, He was a radio operator, mechanic & gunner on a B17 Bomber. Joseph received the Distinguished Flying Cross for participating in the mission that was the first successful attempt for wheeled planes to fly from Hawaii to the Philippines. While in the Philippines, Joseph was among the troops ordered to surrender to save General Weinwright and all of his men. He spent 39 months as a POW in the Japanese prison camps and 43 days on the prison hell ship the Totora Maru until he was liberated in August 1945. He met his wife of 63 years at a welcome home celebration. Joseph stayed in the Air Force for 30 years and retired in 1965 as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. He then worked for the Stony Point Post Office for 14 years and retired at age 65. Joseph lived a full and meaningful life committed to his family, country and a deep belief in God. Joseph is survived by his loving wife Angelina and their family. Dawn Marie Hawthorne (nee Lee), 48, of Tappan, died on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. Cherished daughter of Kenneth and Geraldine (nee Pagliocca) Lee of Orangeburg. Beloved mother of Robert Hawthorne and her son-in-law James of Washington DC, Christopher D. Hawthorne of Tappan, and Danielle Marie Hawthorne of Tappan. Survived by her former husband Robert P. Hawthorne and his family of Basking Ridge, NJ. Adored sister of Donna and Robert Chiapperino of Blauvelt and Julie Ann Gallagher of Nanuet. Also survived by six nieces and nephews and many other loving relatives. JACKSON, HELEN

Helen Jackson (nee Paulsen) of Yonkers died on Thursday September 2, 2010 at age 90. Born on May 26, 1920 to Charles and Martha Paulsen in Yonkers where she was raised and attended local schools. Mrs. Jackson worked for Ward-Leonard Manufacturers in Mt. Vernon for many years prior to her retirement. She was predeceased by her husband William Jackson who died in 1975. Helen is survived by her sister, Marlene Verno and pre-deceased by her brother Charles Paulsen and sister Charlotte Moen. Also survived by nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. LUND, GEORGE

George E. Lund 91 of Byram, died Wednesday, September 1 at Greenwich Hospital. Born March 4, 1919. He was the son of the Ralph D. and Gertrude (Parcell) Lund. George attended Greenwich Schools. A veteran of War World II, George received a Medal of Honor for his occupation in Japan. He worked for 41 years with the Railroad in the Signal Department. Retired in 1982 from Metro-North. Mr. Lund was a volunteer firefighter in the Port Chester Fire Department and a member of Washington Engine & Hose Co# 4 for 57 years . He served as Captain (1968-1969) and was Head Driver for many years. Better known as "Unc", "Lundy" and "Pal", George helped his nephew for 20 years at Rusty Oxer, Inc. after his retirement. Married 59 years and survived by his wife, Barbara Nethercott of Greenwich, his daughter, Judy of Greenwich, two grandchildren Lisa Morrison of Norwalk and James Morrison of Patterson, NY., and one great grandchild, Jayce Morrison. LYDECKER, MARGARET

Margaret Lydecker of Montrose, NY, formerly of Sparkill passed away on September 1, 2010. She was 92. Margaret was predeceased by her devoted and loving husband of 70 years, Bill (June 7, 2010). Marg, as she was known by her family and friends, was born in Pearl River on May 29, 1918 to Everett and Maude (MacDonald) Cordukes. She worked for Chemical Bank for many years before retiring and moving to Leisure Knoll in Lakehurst, NJ. While living there, she was active in the local chapter of Deborah Hospital, serving as president and volunteering at the hospital. She was an avid gardener, belonged to a bowling league, and a skilled baker, known for her delicious pies. In later years, she and her husband Bill moved to New Port Richey, FL, where they enjoyed being close to old friends and family. They returned to Rockland to be close to their children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Margaret is survived by her two daughters, Margaret Leahy and her husband George of West Nyack, Linda Scarantino and her husband Charles of Chestnut Ridge, two granddaughters, Jennifer Donaghy and her husband Raymond and Alison Bucalo and her husband Keith. She will be greatly missed by her cherished great-grandchildren, Tyler, Casey and Dylan Donaghy and Emmett Bucalo. She leaves a sister in law, Wilda Lydecker of Sparkill and nephews Richard and William Meyer. Visitation will be on Saturday, September 4, 2010 from 10-11 AM at Michael J. Clarence "Pint" Murray, 82, of New Rochelle, NY, passed away on August 28, 2010. He was retired from the NYS Thruway Authority. PURPURA, JAMES H.

James H. Purpura died suddenly on September 1, 2010. He was 57. Beloved son of Josette M. L. Glum. Loving brother to Jacqueline and John. He was predeceased by his brother Peter in November 2007 and father, Jack Purpura, grandmother, Frances Purpura and Lucienne Guepet, grandfathers Peter Purpura and Henri L. SILVERMAN, RUTH FIDEL

Ruth Fidel Silverman, 76, of Londonderry NH and formerly of Ossining, NY, died at home on the evening of Tuesday, August 31. Her passing was peaceful and without pain. Ruth was born on November 19, 1933 in New York City, the daughter of the late Joseph Fingerhart and Nellie Silverstein Fingerhart Fidel. She was the mother of Karen L.S. Robinson of Londonderry and Margot J. Silverman of Larchmont, NY. She was the grandmother of Brooke, Christopher, George, and Shea Robinson of Londonderry. She was mother-in-law of John Robinson of Londonderry. Ruth was a graduate of Bennington College and earned a master's degree in social work at the Columbia University School of Social Work. As a psychiatric social worker in Westchester County, New York, she counseled returning veterans of the Vietnam war, families, and children. As a therapist at the Westchester County Medical Center, she was also a member of the faculty of the Cornell University School of Medicine. A private burial will take place at the Pillsbury Cemetery in Londonderry. In lieu of flowers, friends are urged to contribute to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, The Young Adult Institute Day Treatment Program in Tarrytown, NY, or the organization of their choice. STAHLIN, ANN M.

Ann M. Stahlin, 91, a lifelong White Plains resident, passed away on September 1, 2010. Born on June 6, 1919 to Anna (Czintula) & Percival Brownie. Ann married Charles R. Stahlin on October 20, 1947. She worked as a medical billing clerk in St. Agnes Hospital for 25 years. She was an avid baker and reader especially History, and also had a knack for handicrafts. Her joy was spending time with children and watching her grandchildren play sports. Her family always came first. Ann was a member of the Elmsford Seniors, a volunteer at the George Washington Elementary School and a volunteer in the office of the White Plains Presbyterian Church where she was also a member. Survived by her three children: Lynette Stahlin Rubillard of Boca Raton, Fl, Lanice Stahlin Sputo (Dom) of White Plains, NY, James Stahlin of Anthem, AZ and four grandchildren; Lauren Anne & Danielle Sputo and Robert Charles & James Alexander Rubillard. STINGONE, ROCCO F.

Rocco F. Stingone, passed away, surrounded by his family, September 1, 2010 at age 82. Born November 28, 1927 in Roccasecca, Frosinone, Italy to Gabriel and Bernadette (Fraioli) Stingone. He served in the US Army during WWII and worked as a mutual clerk for Yonkers Raceway. Rocco was also the former Executive Director of the Don Bosco Community Center in Port Chester and was an avid golfer. Survived by his beloved wife Mary Ann (DeGiacomo), children Linda, Joanne, Mary Ellen, and Paula Stingone, Lisa (Billy) Spano, Diana and David Diehr, grandchildren Billy Ray, Nicholas, and Anthony Spano, Jessica and Kelly Diehr, Anthony Simms and Chris McLaughlin, siblings Mary Pallone, Carmine and Gabriel (Etta) Stingone, and daughter-in-law Lana Diehr.
