MARSHALL, MARY DYER

Mary Dyer Marshall of Pearl River, a schoolteacher at Clarkstown High School, died October 16, 2000 at Nyack Hospital in Nyack, New York. Mrs. Marshall served as Chairman and faculty member of the Foreign Languages Departments at Clarkstown High School. She taught French, Latin and Greek at the high school. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Marshall was born August 24, 1908 in Niagara Falls, New York to Michael and Nelle Costello Dyer. She was educated in Albany and graduated from the State University of New York at Albany. She earned advanced degrees in languages and education. She also studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. Mrs. Marshall was a resident of the Nyack Manor Nursing Home. Before moving there, she lived in Pearl River, New York. Locally, she was a literacy tutor for immigrants. Mrs. Marshall will be remembered for her dedication to teaching. She influenced several of her students to enter the teaching profession as foreign language instructors. She had a strong interest in French culture. She combined her love for language with an interest in travel. She operated a travel agency with her late huaband. She visited many countries, including Ireland, France, Greece, Egypt and Italy. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Anne Marshall of Congers, New York, Lawrence Dyer of Westport, Connecticut, Michael Dyer of Niagara Falls, New York and Sharon Dyer of Arlington, Virginia. Family members who died earlier include her husband, Lucien W. Marshall, Jr., who died in 1983. Calling hours are Sunday, October 22 from 3 to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home, 100 Franklin Avenue, Pearl River, New York. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, October 23, 2000 10:00 am St. Pauls Roman Catholic Church, Congers, NY. Cremation private.
