James A. Naismith, 76, of W. Nyack died Tuesday, June 27, 2000. He was born November 19, 1923 to John and Grace Naismith. He graduated from Swarthmore College and received his Masters Degree from Teacherís College, Columbia University. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He lived in the Nyacks for the past 33 years. Jim retired from Rockland Community College in 1986 where he chaired the Performing Arts Department. He started the College Barn Theater there as well. He was the recipient of the Chancellors Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Rockland County Executive Arts Award. He directed many plays at the Elmwood Playhouse in Nyack. He was the grandson of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball. He is survived by Eugene Possidento, his daughters Rachael, Lauren and Annie, his brother Stuart, and his grandchildren Evan and Ben. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 AM at the Nyack Center, Corner of Depew and Broadway, Nyack.
