Sister Miriam Therese Peppin, O.S.U., director of the New Rochelle Office of the Aging and the Hugh Doyle Senior Center, died of cancer on February 5, 2010 at St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, NY. She was a member of the St. Teresa's Ursuline community in New Rochelle. Sr. Miriam Therese devoted her life to the care of the sick and elderly. Her 26 years of service, from 1977 to 2003, as the director of the New Rochelle Office of the Aging is a record of leadership in providing social services, education, and support to the senior citizens of the city. Among her accomplishments at the Hugh Doyle Senior Center was the creation of a computer center with facilities and instruction for seniors to learn the use of computer technology. The facility is named in her honor. In 2000 she received a Merit Award for Outstanding Work from the City of New Rochelle. In her retirement she served as an advocate of the elderly. She was founder and president of Meals on Wheels (19831985) and a Board Member from 1983. From 1972 to 1977, she was a social worker at the Dumont Nursing Home. Prior to that she had served as infirmarian in the convent, where she had also filled management positions in the operations of the community. She served in the local civic community as member of Boards of Directors including the Council of Community Service (19621966), the Nutrition Committee of the New Rochelle Medical Center (1986-2000), the Marian Residence from 1990, and the Board of Trustees of The Ursuline School (1990-1992). Other organizations she served include the Interreligious Council, the AARP Chapter, and the Senior Personnel Placement Bureau. Sister Miriam Therese held a bachelor's degree in sociology from the College of New Rochelle and an MPS in Gerontology Service from The New School. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Malone, NY. Born in Massena, NY to Marion McElwain Peppin and Wallace Peppin on November 4, 1931, she was one of four of children. She entered the Ursulines in 1949, and after first formation in the novitiate, made her first vows in 1952 and her final vows in 1955. Her religious formation continued at the juniorate in Waterville, Maine, from 1952 to 1955, and her third formation was at the Ursuline Generalate in Rome in 1969-1970. She is survived by a sister Eleanor Rockhill, and she is predeceased by a sister, Shirley Woods, and brother, Richard Peppin. The wake will be held at The Ursuline Convent of St. Teresa, 39 Willow Dr, New Rochelle on Sunday, February 7 from 2-4 & 6-8pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at Holy Family Chapel, The College of New Rochelle on Monday, February 8 at 10am. Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
