PARDON, JOHN F.

John F. Pardon, a long-time resident of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, died on October 19, 2008 at Rosary Hill Home after a short illness. He was 70 years old. Mr. Pardon was the only child of the late Mr. Francis C. Pardon, Jr., and Mrs. Dorothy Parmele Pardon. He was born January 30, 1938, in East Meadow, NY. The family moved to the Sparta section of Ossining, NY in 1943, then to Croton in 1947. After graduation from Croton-Harmon High school in 1956 he attended and graduated from SUNY Canton, NY in 1958 and Rider University, Lawrenceville, NJ in 1962. Following military service in the U.S. Army he began a sports writing career. He was Sports Editor for the Ossining (NY) Citizen Register from 1963 to 1966 and then a member the sports staff of the Asheville (NC) Citizen-Times from 1966 to 1971. Changing careers, he returned to Croton and was employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs in Montrose, NY. He retired in 1993. Brought up as a Christian Scientist, in his middle years, John was a member of the Reformed Church of Cortlandtown in Montrose where he was a Deacon, Elder and Vice-President of Consistory. In recent years he attended and became a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Croton. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion, Fox-Eklof Post 505 in Croton. John had a life-long interest in baseball history and research. He also enjoyed listening to opera, reading and bowling. For many years he was an active member of the Tarry Squares square dance club. "The Joy of my life was that I was lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time,” he said about being a founding member of the Society for American Baseball Research. "Sixteen baseball research enthusiasts met in Cooperstown, NY in 1971; and little did we know what we began.” Today the Society has 7,000 members. John is survived by several cousins; Richard and Jean Dunn of Pleasant Valley, NY; Barbara Dunn Smith, Pleasant Valley, NY; Richard Dunn, Lake Katrine, NY; Daniel Dunn, Larchmont, NY; Alice Jackson, Tacoma, WA; Roger Niles, Bel Air, MD, and Cynthia Niles, Teommy, Baltimore, MD. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the EDWARD F. CARTER FUNERAL HOME 41 Grand Street, Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520. Memorial Services will be held on Friday October 24th at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Croton-on-Hudson at 11:00 am. Burial will be private and take place at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
