BASIC FUNCTION
The Sports Editor provides content that is essential to the successful execution of the Information Center mission. To succeed, the Sports Editor is a self-starter with outstanding people and written and verbal communication skills, and has the ability to excel under intense deadline pressure while handling multiple short- and long-term assignments. Learns and contributes in a rapidly changing environment. Demonstrates flexibility and is skilled at multitasking. Uses time efficiently. Contributes to a team environment. RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervising the sports staff, including short and long-term planning, scheduling and beat assignments to maximize resources and provide our audience with a comprehensive local sports report.
Brainstorming and assigning sports content, including game and spot news, enterprise and feature coverage for presentation across all platforms.
Keeping the Local News Editor informed of news and other developments.
Monitoring other web sites and media and the wires for sports news tips.
Motivating and managing a diverse sports staff, including setting long- and short-term goals, offering feedback and guidance, evaluating performance on an ongoing informal and regular formal basis.
The ability to think strategically to achieve long-term goals.
Preparing sports reports, still and video photography for presentation on LoHud.com.
Communicates regularly with editors in other departments to ensure smooth delivery of the news & follow-ups.
Fair, balanced and accurate reporting and adherence to the highest standards of journalism and Gannett’s ethics policy.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in journalism, communications or a related field, five or more years of daily journalism experience, experience in working with multiple platforms, and a broad knowledge of our market, and of current events, sports and the sports business, as well as key topics for our targeted audience. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including speaking and interviewing on and off camera and writing in a variety of formats and styles. Dedicated to hard work and to the craft of journalism; Self-starter. Capable of working with minimal supervision; Loyal to the mission. Works to accomplish priorities as established by department head. Flexible. Able to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment. Effective time manager.
