Where Died
70th floor-North Tower
Myrna Maldonado-Agosto

Loss and gain have collided in ways that are still hard to count for the family of Myrna Maldonado-Agosto, a Port Authority employee who worked on the 70th floor of the World Trade Center's north tower.

Maldonado-Agosto wasn't born in Rockland, but grew up at St. Agatha's Home in Nanuet and attended local schools. A resident of the Bronx, she was 49 when she died in the terrorist attacks.

Since then, Maldonado-Agosto's two sons, Jordan, 27, and Jarid, 32, have left New York and moved to Miami.

Jarid now has two children of his own: a son, Jesiah, 7, and a daughter, Saphira, 3. They are the grandkids Maldonado-Agosto will never meet.

In past years, the family has gathered at Ferncliff Cemetery, in Hartsdale, where Maldonado-Agosto is buried, to mark the anniversary of Sept. 11.

On those days, with the whole family gathered together in grief, time seems to come to a standstill, said sister Frances Maldonado Mercado, who lives two doors down from Myrna's old address in the South Bronx.

But on most days Mercado is painfully aware of how much time separates her from her older sister.

In 2010, Mercado lost her other two siblings, Ray Maldonado, 53, and Zonia Maldonado, 55, to illness.

Her daughter, Melanie, was only 10 years old when her favorite aunt died.

Melanie celebrates her 21st birthday in August, and will graduate from Le Moyne College in Syracuse next year. Her sister would have wanted to be there, Mercado said.

"I sometimes think about how much time has passed," she said. "How much Myrna missed."
